Latest Kite Tales

Kite Tales

Letter from the Editor:

It's been a great year so far for Theta. We've had a blast at our social events like Twin

Stars and Pretty in Pink, while still giving back to the community with events like the

Parents’ Weekend Pancake Breakfast with Phi Psi and a 5K with Sigma Chi.

Our fall athletes have earned honors in the conference, the region, and the country, while

Theta maintained the highest GPA out of all the sororities on campus last semester.

For winter term, things are looking up as well. We'll be welcoming a new slate, a new

pledge class, and a brand-new sorority to campus. Alpha Delta Pi will be fielding a pledge

class here this winter, and we look forward to having another great addition to W&L's

Greek life. Theta's next editor, Alex Harper, will update you on that in the next issue of

Kite Tales.

And we seniors are finishing up our applications to jobs and graduate schools, getting

ready for life after W&L. We're excited to have fun and work hard (...not

last two terms at school, and I know that the entire senior class will miss W&L, especially

our Theta sisters, when graduation rolls around this June.

It's been great to let everyone know what Theta has accomplished this past year as Editor,

and I know Alex Harper will do a great job next term.

Yea thine,

Theta Academics

Kappa Alpha Theta takes

academics very seriously. Although

you can always count

on a Theta to be tons of fun,

there is no joking around when

it comes to making sure school

work is complete and correct.

Because of this, Theta now

boasts the highest GPA of any

sorority on campus. Furthermore,

Thetas are more than

happy to help others with their

academic needs. Many members

of the sorority are peer

tutors, helping those in entry

level classes succeed. Additionally,

a sister is always willing

to help another sister with

school work.

Because Theta has a wide

variety of majors and academic

interests, you can always find a

sister for help any subject, from

math to Mandarin Chinese, and

tutoring sessions around campus

and in the sorority house

are a common sight. As the

semester draws to a close,

Thetas can be seen across campus

vigorously writing papers,

studying for final exams, and

finishing up projects. Although

this time of year is incredibly

stressful, Theta sisterhood

makes life a little easier. The

relaxation and fun that occur at

Theta study breaks and the

knowledge that a sister will

always have your back, keep

spirits high. The combination

of hard work and Theta love

make finals, and the rest of the

term, more enjoyable, and they

lead to outstanding academic

performances by Thetas in all

majors.

Theta Social Life

Theta social life this past

term can be summed up in one

word: excellent. And we have

our two social chairs, Laura

Cavanaugh and Sarah Kientz,

to thank for such a wonderful

semester. The Pretty in Pink

Party and the Twin Stars Formal

have been, by far, the two

social highlights of this year.

The Pretty in Pink party,

which we hosted with Kappa

and KD, was incredibly well

attended by all three sororities.

After observing the sea of

bright pink consuming the

dance floor and the positive

and enthusiastic interactions

between everyone, regardless

of their Greek affiliation, it can

safely be said that Pretty in

Pink was one of the best parties

at W&L. The sisters enjoyed

theTwin Stars Formal in

Charlottesville as well. Invitations

were coveted, and at least

one Theta brought more than

one friend as a date! The sisters

all had a fantastic time.

Theta social life has been a

great break from the stresses of

school, as well as a means of

getting to know more people at

W&L outside of class. Our

positive relationships with all

social groups on campus are

reflected in the high attendance

and genuine enjoyment of our

formals and parties and the

entire sorority looks forward to

what the upcoming semester

holds.

Theta Unparralleled in Athletics

To say the women of Theta

excelled in athletics this fall

would be an understatement.

Both the women’s cross country

and volleyball teams won

ODAC championships, and

several Thetas received honors

for their outstanding contributions.

Jess Shaw was named

ODAC runner of the year,

while Kat Telfeyan and Christine

Ballistreri earned second

team all-ODAC honors. On the

volleyball team, Rachael Phillips

was named ODAC player

of the year, and Megan

Steinhardt was named an honorable

mention selection to the

all-ODAC team. The field

hockey team reached the

ODAC semifinals, led by Sallie

Armstrong and Emmy Mat-

Armstrong and Emmy

Mathews, who received All-

Region honors, and Grace

McGee and Christina Merchant

who were also named to the All

-ODAC team. Anne Van Devender

led the women’s soccer

team to the ODAC semifinals,

and was also named to the All-

America soccer team and received

the 2008 women’s soccer

ODAC/Farm Bureau

scholar-athlete award. Congratulations

to all the Theta

women who competed in W&L

athletics this fall, and stay

tuned for Theta’s contributions

to winter sports with the swimming,

women’s basketball, and

indoor track seasons starting

soon.

Philanthropy in 2008

Despite their participation on various sports teams, in clubs, and in the classroom,

the members of Kappa Alpha Theta made it a priority to give back to the

Lexington community this fall.

In October, Theta teamed up with the other Greek organizations on campus to

put on the annual children’s Halloween Carnival. The 5K race cosponsored by

Sigma Chi and the Parent’s Weekend Pancake Breakfast with Phi Psi, both in November,

were met with enthusiasm throughout the W&L community.

Kimberly Poissant, a junior Theta, was impressed with the participation at the

Pancake Breakfast. “It was great to bring my parent’s to the breakfast and show

them how service oriented Theta is. There were tons of girls there supporting the

event and it was clear that they all cared about the event’s success.” As the term

slowly came to an end, the members of Kappa Alpha Theta continued to give back

to the community, coordinating the blood drive with Chi Psi, collecting children’s

toys for the “Toys for Tots” program, and by sponsoring three disadvantaged children

during the holiday season. This winter, Theta hopes to take advantage of the

newly established Lexington chapter of CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates),

Theta’s national philanthropy.
